2018 Girls in ICT celebration kicks off
The Ministry of Communications has organised the 2018 Girls in ICT celebration with training activities in some selected districts in the Ashanti Region.
The training forms part of activities of the celebration, which is a flagship programme of the Ministry.
Over 500 young girls were selected from deprived basic schools within the Ashanti Region and have benefitted from the training. The programme was put together to introduce the girls to ICT and break the myths surrounding the use of ICT by girls in the country.
Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, toured a few training centres to ascertain the quality of the training activities. She visited the Nkwantakese Enhanced Community Information Centre (eCIC) in the Afigyakwabre district of the Ashanti Region to interact with both the trainers and the trainees.
She encouraged the girls to put in their best effort and become ICT champions in Ghana and beyond. She added that the choice to venture into ICT skills was the best choice anyone could make today regarding the enormous nature of technology in the world. She stated that the ICT field is one that can easily open doors of employment opportunities since it is an area where expertise are mostly needed, especially in the era of digital revolution.
The girls were taken through introduction to scratch applications and some basic structure of HTML, which are all programming applications. The training would also afford them the opportunity to come up with creative programming skills such as the production of games and art works.
Various Prizes have been organised to reward those who will excel in the training, on individual basis. Also, ICT labs will be provided for the first three top schools to win the competition.
There are also seasoned women who have excelled in ICT to become mentors for the girls to ensure continuous practice and sustenance of the programme.
